In conjuction with 10:10:10 global celebration of climate solutions, here we are coming up with new blog:

All of any upcoming events, past event reports and even gardening updates (we have garden! Do you know that?) will be posted in the new blog. However, this old blog had always been our companion and grown up together with SP Environment Club. So, this blog won't be shut down and will always be your memorial for any previous events.

“Enough protest marches, enough banners, enough websites. Let's roll up our sleeves and start solving the problem, all together.”

10:10global (http://www.1010global.org/), together with 350 (http://www.350.org/), coordinates a Global Work Party on 10^th October 2010, aka 10:10:10. This global work party emphasizes on everyone’s cumulative contributions to cut carbon dioxide by 10% starting 2010 so that the current 392 ppm of atmospheric carbon dioxide value could be brought down to 350 ppm, the upper safety limit eventually.

As we said, this is a global event, hence of course not excluding Singapore. In Singapore itself, this most happening event would be manifested into a “Balik Kampung Carnival”. Among various activities held at carnival such as massive yoga, movie screening, and green shopping; SP Environment Club will be setting up games booth for you to celebrate the climate solutions!

Recycling Outreach Program 2010

Interested in creating change in the neighbourhood? Enthusiastic over being mentors for advocates of the message of recycling with secondary school students? Here’s your chance!

SPENV will be having a Recycling Outreach Program 2010 under NEA’s LEAD school program and we will be going through a 1 day workshop on how to engage the public and recycling tips, etc. Also, we will be creating awareness about the need to recycle items for the public so that our net carbon footprint in every household in Singapore can be lowered.

Green March

In conjunction with Earth Day, Singapore Polytechnic launched its Go Green Movement. The day was declared SP car-free day and SP Gates were closed to all motorised vehicles from 12am to 5pm. All staff & students made their way to SP via ‘BMW’ (Bus, MRT, Walk). The four-month campaign, which is an initiative by SP Go Green Committee, aims to champion the green movement amongst youths.

You'd probably have seen the posters around school or took photos at the photobooths. On 4th August 2010, Dr. Amy Khor, the mayor of Southwest CDC, will lead the Green March in SP. Participants will be taken through three stages, forming a single goal in mind - to “Dream to Go Green”. The closing ceremony will mark the end of the entire green campaign efforts by SP for the year.

SP Environment Club will be setting up a booth at Moberly. We'll be selling products made of recyclable materials, as well as publicising our club. We need helpers who are interactive and engaging to raise funds. Money earned will go into a non-profit environmental organisation.

Recycling Reading

Thinking of throwing your old books away?

Don’t throw them away.... There may be people who are interested in them and would like to read them.

Event: Recycling Reading
Dates: 29 & 30 June (Collection)
1 & 2 July (Exchange)
Time: 12pm to 4pm
Locations: Main Library & Hilltop Library

Objective: To 'recycle' reading. Instead of throwing old books away, the people can exchange with another books which they are interested in or simply donate to BookCross@SP.

The concept of bookcrossing is that books will be left out in the hotspots in SP (Main Library & Hilltop Library), and anyone who chances upon the book, can pick it up to read. When that person has finished reading, the book will be left at the hotspotsagain, so that someone else can pick that book up!

We accept any kind of books.

We are looking for 4 helpers to man the booth at Hilltop Library from 12pm-4pm on 29Jun-2July. The last shift on the collection dates will have to stay back a bit to sort out the books according to categories so as to facilitate exchange of books on the next days.

For those who are unable to help, we hope that you will support us in the donation of the books.

BYEE Camp

On 18-20Jun 2010, I went to Bayer Eco Camp at NUS Prince George Park Residents. Out of the 50+ entries for proposal writing, the top 9 are selected as Bayer Young Environmental Envoys. I was one of them. The camp is one criteria that has to be fulfilled before we can become Envoys. And the top 4 will get to go to Germany for a free one-week study trip in November. The 9 participants come from different walks of life - JC, Poly, ITE, Uni. We have a common goal and that is to sustain Earth. We bonded well over the 3D2N camp. Networking is very important. All of us shared our experiences in environmental activities.

The camp was made up of lectures from professionals from a good mix of industries - MEWR, NUS, ESI, Bayer, NParks. We gain insight in how industries fare in sustainable development and what the professionals think. We went to BCA Zero Energy Building & Pulau Semakau. Throughout the camp, we're also asked to come up with a debate on whether Singapore is ready for the fight against climate change.

And the food & accomodation are way beyond my expectations :) The three days passed too fast, I feel. Now, it's like but a dream.

If you've got the chance, you gotta join BYEE next year! It's an awesome experience you'll never forget.

Re-Live 2010 - Post event report

In conjunction with World Environment Day, ECO Singapore had an event, ‘Re-Live 2010’ from 4th June 2010 to 6th June 2010 at Somerset 313. The youth-led event was a collaboration with SP Environment Club that intends to drive the public to RE-think and RE-live their present habits through a holistic approach.
A series of events took over a period of three days. Some highlights of the event include Flash Mob, Green Walk and a Bazaar. These mini-events serve to promote a sustainable lifestyle to the general public in an interactive and engaging manner. A few of SP Environment Club members participated in the flash mob on 5th June.
The flash mob, while attention grabbing, carries an underlying message – that we should be working to reduce biodiversity loss. It also ties in with the International Year of Biodiversity 2010, which is proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly. Going around in their Re-Live T-shirts, the volunteers spread the environmental messages to the public.

Earth Day is a day to create awareness of our environment and inspire people to make change. In this important day, SP had its “Car-Free Day” and we (SPENV club) had our “Be Green Wear Green Activity!” We started this event on 22 April ( 10 am to 5pm) and our head facilitators brought their members to scout for students wearing green T-shirts and encourage them to take a photo so that they will have the opportunity to win popular vouchers. Furthermore, to commemorate for this event, we ask the students that know about “Earth Day” to sign on the paper Earth.

Be a Green Fashionista!

Green fashion is quite unheard of if you ask ordinary students and the man on the streets. Furthermore, if they were asked to explain what is green fashion, their most likely answers would be that the clothing is biodegradable or made from organic materials. Green fashion is not just that anymore. There is so much more to it and here, in this article, we will explain how the fashion industry has been evolving to accommodate a “green” change in consumer’s lifestyle choices and what green fashion has to offer today.

Green fashion is a new term coined to describe a new trend of fashion that is more environmentally-conscious. From big fashion houses like Yves Saint Laurent to mass retail giant Target, many are embracing the eco chic. Consumers are looking at greener alternatives as many began to realise that environmental destruction and climate change are real threats in the world we live in now. A Newsweek report published in 2008 shows that there is an increase of eco-fashion awareness from 6% in 2004 to 18% that year. For a piece of designer clothing to be considered “environmentally-friendly”, there is a set of criteria to qualify as one. They include being animal-free, ethically-produced, artisan, tailor-made, fair trade-certified, organic, recycled and second-hand. Designers may choose to follow a few or all the criteria in their products.

Fabric is the main material for clothing. It is made up of many fibres and these fibres are sourced from natural materials like cotton or man-made materials like polyester. Now, clothes makers are beginning to use materials such as bamboo and hemp for their fabrics as they are less energy-intensive during production and do not release as much carbon dioxide. They also do not require chemicals such as pesticides and fertilisers during their growth therefore they are organic and do not pollute the environment. Clothes can also be made from recycled materials. For example, a famous American brand of denim line, Loomstate, uses recycled plastic to create sportswear such as jackets.

So now you know more about green fashion. Spread the word. Make an informed choice when purchasing items and always keep the environment in mind!

Hemisphere Foundation 2010

Hemisphere's presentation

Hemisphere foundation is an organization which helps to raise environmental awareness among youths and children of today. It has also embarked on many projects to help "green" our world we live in today.Some examples include, hosting competitions like 'Actions for Earth', Project Clean Water in Cambodia, Overseas Community Involvement Programme, workshops, informative talks and environment-related camps.

As Singapore Polytechnic Environment Club, we have offered to help out on the informative talks section. Volunteers will be trained by professionals from Hemisphere Foundation. The objective of the training was to present to different secondary schools' students about environmental issues such as climate change and waste management.

We also took part in camps organise by Hemisphere, raised awareness of environmental issues through workshops by Hemisphere Foundation at the Science Centre this year.

This award ceremony was to commemorate all of the hard work put into the competition by the students from over 60 participating schools. More than 600 teams took part in the competition but only the top 10 finalists were able to receive the prize.

The perfect "green" room category

Our team from Singapore polytechnic's environment club also took part and were able to qualify for the 2 categories of Secondary/tertiary category & the perfect "green" room category. Both of which, they received remarkable comments for. They came in 1st place for the website presentation which includes the outreach and 2nd place for the perfect "green" room category.

This is what our winner, Edward Giauw has to say for the competition.
" Its definitely feels good to win the competition but nothing comes without hard work. In retrospect, our little escapade had a lot of ups and downs. Many that would have broken up the team and caused the project to crumble. There is only one reason that held us together till the end, it was the fact that this competition could better ourselves to learn more about the environment."

SP Go Green: Post Event Report

It is 22^nd April of 2010. Why is this date special? It is Earth Day; a day that is internationally recognized to belong to mother earth. As I entered Singapore Polytechnic, what I saw was a row of SP students aligning themselves along the SP Convention Centre, giving out free green apples. This is an initiative by Macdonald to promote a healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle among its consumers which is something that we really need now in modern society.

Moving on, I saw the Clean and Green Singapore (CGS) booth set up directly at the foot of the steps leading to the Convention Centre with banners promoting their facebook and twitter page. New media is certainly something that is linking people up. I had the privilege of working as one of the Machiam news reporters for CGS and had the chance to interview different people all around SP. I was really nervous for the first few times of doing the interview, but as time passed by, I was getting really used to it. Also, all photos and videos taken were immediately uploaded ‘live’ to the CGS facebook page; http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1503977665&ref=profile#!/CGSingapore?ref=ts.

During the entire day, there were different activities going on all together. Green Bazaar; green exhibitions on latest green technologies, Green Band Competition; Use of recyclables to make into musical instruments to compete for the best music piece created, Models with environmental clothing; catwalk wearing clothes from recyclables, etc. It was so hip-and-happening that I didn’t know the entire list of events that were ongoing all together.

But one thing is for sure. It is definitely heart-warming to see SP students and staff from the different faculties coming together to support the cause to protect the environment. This is an indication that SP is not just an educational institution, but also one that cares for the environment.

SP Earth Day ( Be Green Wear green)

Yesterday was Earth Day!

Other than SP Car Free Day which was highly effective in reducing carbon emission, SP environment club's "Be green wear green" event was also very successful with quite a huge amount of students (wearing green) spotted by environment club members. They were encouraged by our club members to take photos with them( to win vouchers if they are selected in the 20 Top Best Photo Taken) and signed on the Earth to show that they know about Earth Day( and Earth Day's Significance).

Message
Earth Day is a day devoted to raising awareness about the Earth and the issues that interlink with it. Earth Day is special because it is the only event that is celebrated all around the world on the same day.

Importance
It is a day for us to self reflect on what we can contribute to help keep our Mother Earth healthy. But just like Barney says "Everyday is Earth Day" so we should find methods to keep our planet healthy everyday!

Post event report: Earth Hour 2010 @ SP

Over 100 people were estimated to have congregated at Singapore Polytechnic at 8pm where the official festivities took place. I was one of them. And judging by the turnout rate, the publicity from SP Environment Club itself was a success.

By 8pm, a steady stream of people had started tricklingn, armed with mats and food, while the organising committee busied themselves lighting up candles along the pathway. There were also a few astronomy-lovers from SP Astronomy Club setting up their star-gazing equipment.

It was certainly fascinating to watch the buildings plunged into darkness across Singapore Polytechnic. There were many flashes as photographers snapped a quick rapid succession of photos of the before and after shots of the skyline. The onlookers broke out into a cheer when the emcee counted down to zero.

At SP, we lighted the beeswax candles to pledge their support to Earth Hour and formed a formation of “S P 6 0” for aerial photography. Chess and board games coordinated by SP Mind Sports were played in the candlelight, and snacks were being passed around. We were glad to have Mr Tan Hang Cheong (Principal), Mr Lim Cher Yam (Director of Architecture & Built Environment), Ms Chan Choi Ung (Advisor), Ms Angelvin (DSD Officer) to grace the event with their presence.

“We were happy by the huge turnout and we hope that next year’s Earth Hour will reach out to more people and we certainly hope that Earth Hour will garner more support in the future years to come,” says Ruskin Ong, President of Singapore Polytechnic Environment Club.

If everyone takes the effort to make a minor change, the world would have taken a big step.

Earth Hour 2010

At 8.30pm on the 27 March, 2010, millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane, Tel Aviv and Manila will unite and switch off the lights for Earth Hour.

Last year, thousands of people across Singapore took part in Earth Hour as individuals at home and organisations switched off their lights to reduce carbon footprint and many parts of Singapore were plunged into darkness for one hour.

For one hour, commercial entities and residential households around the island powered down their lighting collectively, drawing attention to the extent of energy that actually goes into superfluous lighting.

Singapore Polytechnic Environment Club is also doing its part to generate awareness of Earth Hour 2010 here on campus grounds.

It's More Than A Year of Tiger

14 February 2010 would be a great moment for YOU who celebrating Chinese New Year. Financial crisis would come to the end with numerous red pockets intake, additional new clothes without parents complaining, another sumptuous feast; what to complain about?

While you are happily celebrating these happy moments, let us reminisce that this New Year is the Year of the Tiger. Yes, tiger. According to WWF (World Wildlife Fund), the number of tigers has dropped drastically over the years to around 3,200. Poaching activities may be the prime reason, but if we analyze deeper, the risk that tiger may extinct is because of the lack of drive to stand out and do something to protect this environment. As it is known, ecological balance is something that keeps harmony among nature. Should any of this be threatened (unbalanced), we humans will also ultimately face the consequences. So all the more, we should really think on ways to act and preserve this species in this very unique year.

Since Chinese New Year is just round the corner, while we have fun and enjoy ourselves, let us not forget that there are still impending environmental crisis prevalent. Here we provide some environmental tips for you to practice at home. Remember, it takes just the heart to do it.

1. Your mum surely does provide large amounts of sweets or other plastic-packaged snacks. Do remind your parents or guests to throw those plastics in recycle bin designated for only plastic waste.

2. Remind your mum to buy higher quality cookie container, so the container can be reused for next following years!

3. We know your family has a large social circle. So, buy stuffs in larger volume so the less packaging is involved. But remember not to buy too much until excess which in the end you dump it!

Besides, if you find out that your wardrobe is full of unused clothes, do sort them out and you can donate to some organizations. Practice the beauty of sharing since hey, 14 February is another big day, Valentine’s Day even if you are not attached. Happy New Year and Valentine’s Day!

Photography Competition "Clean and Green Singapore, You and Me"

Background

Great value is often associated with a clean city. A clean city is a strong reflection of our

moral and civic values. But clean cities do not just come by chance. They require much

responsibility and dedication to maintain.

The development of our public health system over the years has contributed much to

Singapore’s status as a ‘clean and green’ city. However, public education remains a

crucial aspect in the sustainability of a clean environment. The challenge is not only for

every Singaporean to understand the importance of taking responsibility of their litter and

the environment, but also to ‘walk the talk’.

The NYAA Council, in partnership with the Photographic Society of National University of

Singapore (NUSPS) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) are jointly organising

a photography competition. This competition aims to showcase the clean and green

scenery in Singapore, the on-going public education effort in keeping Singapore clean as

well as remind the public that we have to do our part to maintain this image.

Theme

The theme of this competition is “Clean and Green Singapore, You and Me”

Participants should submit a series of original digital photographs which is relevant to the

theme and conveys the aim of the competition. This can include but is not limited to

photographs depicting our clean landscape with images of Singaporeans taking

ownership of the environment.

Welfare Club and SP BP Mentoring Club are working with South West CDC on a Christmas Project this December holidays and they have kindly invited our club to join them for this special and meaningful event.

South West CDC are in need of students to visit the selected elderlys. These are elderlys who live in rental flats, either living alone or on financial assistance scheme.

The main purpose of going there is to spread the Christmas mood and bring some foodpacks to them (eg rice, milo, etc). And at the same time, conduct a survey with them. SW CDC does the survey once a year so that they know the living conditions of these elderly and whether they have been cared for.

SW CDC will arrange for the food packs to be delivered to the nearest RC. We pick them up and proceed to the addresses given.

This year, we are doing a totally different thing that has NEVER been done before for Open House! We are making history!

We are collaborating with the rest of the Hearts Cluster (service) clubs and Environment Club is heading it this year. We need people to man the booth and to market the products to basically EVERYONE.

We are making products out of recyclable materials to sell during the Open House Bazaar. Our target audience are mainly secondary school students and secondary school leavers AND everyone that passes by! All profits will go to SP Needy Fund, so YES, you are doing a good deed by just turning up!

The UN-led Seal the Deal Campaign aims to galvanize political will and public support for reaching a comprehensive global climate agreement in Copenhagen in December.

Climate change affects us all. Nine out of every ten disasters recorded are now climate related. Rising temperatures and more frequent floods, droughts and storms affect millions of people’s lives. This is set against a backdrop of financial and food insecurity.

On December 7, governments will gather in Copenhagen, Denmark to respond to one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. The main question will be how protect the planet and create a green economy that will lead to long-term prosperity

Reaching a deal by the time the meeting ends on December 18 will depend not only on complex political negotiations, but also on public pressure from around the globe.

The United Nations has launched “Seal the Deal” campaign that encourages users to sign an online, global petition which will be presented by civil society to governments of the world.

The petition will serve as a reminder that our leaders must negotiate a fair, balanced and effective agreement in Copenhagen, and that they must seal a deal to power green growth, protect our planet and build a more sustainable, prosperous global economy that will benefit all nations and people

Basically, this is a year long project whereby students would have to do presentations in primary schools to spread Eco-messages and information regarding the upcoming competition.

There are various segments to the competition;

1.Calculate your carbon footprint

2.Build a model green house " 1m by 1m" using recycled materials

3.Making a green pledge

and so on...

Apart from this, you will be undergoing trainings to improve your presentations skills and this will be helpful for you in future when you address a crowd. Food and transport allowances will also be provided.

The actual presentations will be scheduled in January to May 2010. The actual event will be on the 29Th of may and there will be roadshows on that day itself. The venue would be the North-point.

There will be a lot of opportunities along the way. For instance, you will be able to join the "Hemispheres Foundation" their trips overseas to help the poor and to educate people on saving the environment.

Participants who are interested in helping the CAUSE, get CCA points and have fun. Pls contact Edward or Janessa. More details would be released in time. But in the meantime, submit your registration a.s.a.p. latest by the end of the week. This is so as we need to send the names to the organiser. The Bayer Young Environmental Envoy 2009 program was organised by Bayer (South East Asia) Pte Ltd and UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) under the ‘Partners for Youth and Environment’ initiative, with the support of National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) and the National Environmental Agency (NEA).

A total of 11 BYEE finalists, including myself, were shortlisted after a nationwide search and together, went on to participate in a 3-day Eco-camp to hone our knowledge on environmental issues and sustainable energy.

Following the Eco-camp, we were given 3 months in which to implement our project ideas. My environmental project involves working with Secondary Schools to create an environment conducive for students to nurture a recycling habit. Students would be encouraged to recycle paper and plastic through a competition. Art and craft workshops would also be organised to teach them how to create usable items from recycled materials. With these, I hope to nurture the recycling habit among the young. For this project, I am glad to have the assistance of members from the SP Environment Club and FOSTER in implementing this project, which is on-going.

This culminated in a project presentation before a panel of distinguished judges. The judges did not take very long to deliberate on the results and we were left on tenterhooks as we awaited their verdict. I felt a great sense of joy when I learnt that I was one of the four BYEE envoys selected to attend an all-expenses paid study trip to Germany in November 2009.

I am proud to be able to represent Singapore at this field trip as I will have the opportunity to meet with BYEE envoys from all over the world. I look forward to sharing and exchanging ideas with my peers on how we can improve environmental awareness. I am also interested to learn how other countries practice environmental protection. We may come from different backgrounds and cultures, but one thing will surely bond us together – our passionate love for our environment and determination to protect it for the next generation and generations to come.

PUB (Public Utilities Board) has invited SP Environment Club members to participate in the "Trash-Free Marina Barrage Initiative". This initiative is about getting visitors to bag their own trash and either bring it home or to throw it at any of the two centralised bins. There will also be a community event held at Marina Barrage on that day and we wish to use that opportunity to reach out to as many visitors as possible. Below here is the scheldue:

SP ENV has been helping to organise the Amazing Green Race every year. This year is no different!

We are looking for enthusiastic station masters who will explain the various games to the teams of participants.

Venue: Stations around campus
We need as many people as possible as there can be up to 30 teams.

There will be a compulsory briefing for ALL station masters on 11Nov 3pm @ Club House.

Young Marine Biologist Award (YMBA) 2009

The Young Marine Biologist Award (YMBA) 2009 is an annual non-profit award by Underwater World Singapore to engage students in researching on marine conservation issues and spreading awareness amongst their peers. This year, students can research on the topic of "Extinction is Forever" and present their findings in either photo-journalism or journalistic writing.

Participants can choose a topic related to extinction and submit the journal in the form of Photo-Journalism (Project A) or Journalistic Writing (Project B). The subject chosen can be a marine animal, a global event or extinction. Students are encouraged to seek reliable sources for content and strive for factual accuracy while respecting copyright guidelines in the Singapore National Union of Journalists’ Code of Professional Conduct.

Project B
Journalistic writing uses the style in newspaper reporting to deliver the story. Entries must include a title, date and crediting of photos to original source. The following structure can be used:

Subhead, which is one or more sentence near the title of the article

WILDLIFE RESERVES SINGAPORE CONSERVATION FUND

Wildlife Reserves Singapore, which manages the Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari and Singapore Zoo, has been a regional leader in environmental conservation through captive breeding programmes, public outreach, scientific research and other conservation activities. To take this a step further, the Wildlife Reserves Singapore Conservation Fund (WRSCF), a registered charity and Institution of Public Character, was established in 2009 with the primary purpose of conserving endangered native wildlife.

Singapore Polytechnic Environmental Club is proud to be one of the local tertiary institutions to raise funds at a charity bazaar for the WRSCF, held in conjunction with World Animal Day. Gurmit Singh and Kym Ng, ambassadors for the charity bazaar, was also present to auction off their personal belongings.

Green Wave 2009

Tree planting on the 15th of May

Singapore Polytechnic is proud to be able to participate in Green Wave 2009. In correspondence to this, some members of Singapore Polytechnic’s Environment Club were caught in the act of planting 6 trees! Undaunted by the task, they worked as a team to put the trees in place before beating the soil together. Kristeen was showing her strength with the use of the shovel to cover the unearthed ground; she’s definitely not to be taken lightly. These students got their hands dirty but cleanliness was the least of their worries. They have indeed showed others that they can have fun under the sun too! Last but not least, let’s say a big thank you to the extra helping hand - the National Parks!

Tree Hunt on the 20th of May

In conjunction to the Green Wave 2009, Singapore Polytechnic’s Environment club has planned and organized a fun and enriching Tree Hunt for the students of the Diploma in Landscape Architecture. The objective of the tree hunt is to convey a couple of messages to the participants: Firstly, by conserving the trees it will preserve the living organisms living in it, secondly, by planting more trees it will then offset our carbon emission and thus in turn slowing down the rate of Global Warming.

Here’s how the Tree Hunt goes:
Participants are given a map with a marked trail and ten unidentified trees
There’s a piece of puzzle and the specific scientific name attached to each tree
The Hunt ends when the participants find the trees in order to attain the pieces of puzzle and names

Green Wave 0n the 22nd of May

On this memorable day, we hosted Green Wave 2009 in Singapore Polytechnic. Our distinguished guests Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Education, Mr Tan hang Cheong, Principal of Singapore Polytechnic, Miss Kristeen Peh, President of Singapore Polytechnic Environment Club, Mr Foong Sew Bun, Singapore Polytechnic Alumnus and current CTO for IBM Singapore and Ms Divjyot Kaur were invited to water the trees. The watering was a success! May all the trees grow tall and healthy!

Be Green Wear Green Week falls on 3rd August to 7th August 2009! This significant week, anyone within the SP campus spotted wearing green were approached and placed their very own signatures onto the cute animals drawn on the boards.

We will like to thank all helpers and spotters who made all this possible! Great job peeps! As well as thank all "greenies" who participated in this event!

Be Green, Wear Green Week

Be Green, Wear Green Week is a pre-publicity event for the Animal Splash. The objective of this event is to raise environmental awareness around campus in the hope that they will support the green way. During this week, on the three days, spotters will be going around the SP campus ‘campaigning’ and to spot any people who are wearing green. The spotters will then take a picture with the person and persuade the person to sign on a montage.

We are looking at around 30 spotters per shift. If you are outspoken and passionate about the environment, then WE WANT YOU!

Mangrove Salvaging @ Sungei Buloh

YoYo! Guess what have we been up to today??? ISC organized a Nature Trip to Sungei Buloh and Env Club went and helped out too. We went to Sungei Buloh to do Mangrove Salvaging! It was a very unique experience and we ALL got our hands dirty! We all had lots of fun and will like to thank all the participants who took time out from their studies to do their part for nature!

World Leadership Conference 2009

World Leadership Conference 2009 is an event where youths from all over the world gather, discuss, evaluate, and come up with possible solutions to curb the issues of global warming & climate change through possible policies or actions that can be done.

It's very first stop is in Singapore where it is held in SMU on the 15-19 June. Through 5-days of interaction and group discussion, we the youths from Asia (e.g. Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, etc.) came up with a Combined Youth Statement which will be collated (with different youth statements coming from participants all around the world). This will then be submitted to our world leaders during December's Copenhagen Climate Change 2009.

TICE ECO Camp 2009

Hello everyone! Wondering why the blog was 'dead' for a while? Here's the reason; we were busy preparing for the annual camp of the env world; TICE Eco Camp. It was held from 12 June to 14 June at the NIE Campus.

This year, 10 participants from SP Environment Club have represented SP to participate in TICE Eco Camp 2009. TICE Eco Camp 2009 was another great success where participants have enjoyed themselves as well as gain valuable environmental knowledge.

Participants were divided to different groups to participate in various activities. They were given task to work on a scenario to save biodiversity in an imaginary island known as “Pulau Ecosia” on the first day, and presented their ideas on the third day of the camp. Each group brainstormed and contributed useful ideas through the knowledge they have gained.

One of the highlights of the camp was visit to Pulau Ubin, Chek Jawa. Participants woke up early in the morning to catch the low tide to get to see the great biodiversity and natural habitat such as hermit crabs, mudskippers, mangroves, etc. in Chek Jawa. After which, participants took up the challenge of identifying various biodiversity such as drills, barnacles, mangroves, hermit crabs, handicapped crabs, etc. This trip to Chek Jawa conveys important message in preserving the Mother Nature as well as appreciate the great biodiversity that we have. Participants all agreed that it was a fulfilling and fruitful trip.

Besides these, there were also eye-opening talks where participants gain useful environmental knowledge and engage in discussion; green challenge which is amazing green race, etc.

Through this camp, participants not only have fun, they also gain lots of useful knowledge as well as great friendship.

RE-Live 2009

RE-Live! 2009 was held from 5 June to 7 June at Bugis Junction with different highlights for the three days. For those who joined us, it was a great experience as we gained more knowledge on environmental issues while the event was a success with the participation of both the public and the helpers and also, improved our interpersonal skills by engaging the public. For those who didn't, do not worry. We will RE-Live the moment again!

5 June: We had the opening ceremony for RE-Live 2009 with SP Daiko Drummers giving us the opening note. Mass action aka Flash mob was also carried out. It involved 100 or more volunteers carrying out 6 different synchronized actions to symbolize the event's 6 themes; food, water, waste, energy, shelter and bio-diversity.

6 June: We had the engaging roadshow, where our volunteers engaged the public to tell them more about the need to conserve mother earth by making the effort to make an extra action; switching off lights when not in use. It is said that one person who make the effort to switch off the lights on standby can save around 1 watt of energy daily. So, think about the scenario of 5 billion people doing that. You CAN SAVE so much energy!

7 June: Aerial photography was the highlight of the day. Over 100 volunteers came together from all around Singapore to form significant images big enough for the camera to see. It was certainly a great experience although the morning sun was really hot.

In conclusion, the event certainly gave all of us many new tips to help save the environment just simply by doing something easy. The point is that you do not have to drastically change your lifestyle and habits to save the earth, it just takes a little step and a constant reminder to be able to make a huge difference. A small step goes a long way.

RE-Live 2009: Rethinking the way you live
